We started a wine tasting group at the beautiful Grande Roche Hotel in Paarl. Every second Thursday evening at 18h00. We invite a winery to present their wines and we taste each wine blind. Tasters can can make notes and try to name the cultivar(s) and vintage. After each wine, the bottle is unveiled and discussed. Ideal for beginners and experts.
Beautiful Grande Roche Hotel
OUR TASTINGS
Yesterday we welcomed Perdeberg. The tasting was presented by Mariska Witbooi and she did an excellent job. Perdeberg wines has long been a favourite of mine, and they spoilt us by allowing us to taste the Endura wooded Chenin, their flagship white. The most enjoyable wine as scored by the tasters, was the Dry Land Collection Pinotage, a prime example of how amazing this cultivar can be. The Malbec was atypical, but no less enjoyable. Thank you Perdeberg and Grande Roche Restaurant!
Popped in at Andreas Wine &
Luxury Accommodation last week – what a beautiful venue. In the middle of the
Wellington Winelands, with the centre of town just down the road. Loved the
accommodation and setting. Henry is the perfect host and his team will ensure
you don’t forget your stay.
They only produce a Shiraz, and
it is wonderful. Complemented our spicy beef ribs perfectly.
Hillcrest Boutique Winery is not generally a name that makes
you sit up and take notice. However, at the recent Cab Franc Festival, I was
pleasantly surprised by their Cab Franc offering, so much so that it counted
amongst my top 3. Priced at R145/b, it’s a steal, considering that Holden Manz
(R600/b) and Nelson’s Creek (R500/b), are of similar quality. Their Bordeaux
Blend, with equal quantities of Cab Franc, Merlot & Petit Verdot with a
dash of Cab Sav, was also amazing.
This prompted me to revisit the winery this week to taste
their other wines. They proved to be great as well, with the standouts the
Malbec, and off course the Cab Franc & Bordeaux Blend. Also loved the
Merlot.
The usual suspect from Durbanville, Sav Blanc, was also beautiful.
If you ever experienced the joy that Cabernet Franc brings,
the Cab Franc Festival held annually at Avontuur Wine Estate was the place to
be.
This event was held on Saturday, 18th of May, and
as always, it did not fail in delivering a memorable event.
21 Wineries represented their wines, from Callan, a young garagiste
producing her own style with a bit more fruit than normal, still lovely, to
Raats, synonymous with Cab Franc.
Holden Manz (R600/b) was great, and Muldersbosch had a very interesting
Cab Franc MCC. However, Ondine was my personal favourite, with Nelson’s Creek
and Hillcrest 2nd and 3rd.
The bargain of the day was from Onderkloof @ R80/b, and thrown
into the bargain – 91 points from Tim Atkin.
We live in the heart of the
Winelands, and the wine industry has been a passion of ours for many years.
Not only do we attend most of the
award winning tastings, but we also do blind tastings where these award winning
wines are challenged by lesser known wineries.
Our tours are intimate, and these lesser known gems almost always forms part of our itineraries.

Our Daily Tour
We promise you a personal tour of
the Cape Winelands that you won’t forget. From the hidden gems that few people
know about (which we prefer), to the big names, if that is what you prefer, a
tour will be tailored around you requirements.
Your tour will be planned based
on our successful standard tours, however, we will alter it according to your
special needs. We will go the extra mile to let you experience that special
wine you heard about, tasted or want to taste.
Included in our tours are
optional cellar tours (some people prefer more time tasting), all tasting fees,
air conditioned transport and a certified tour guide. A stop for a delicious
lunch forms part of the tour, but is for your own account.
